Insect Adventures

We had some crazy insect observations this past week! Josie's mom, LaNelle, brought us a Tobacco Hornworm that was covered in what looked like little sesame shaped eggs. Upon further research we discovered that the poor caterpillar had been attacked by parasitic wasps, which had laid it's eggs inside of the caterpillar. Apparently the eggs hatch and the larvae eat the insides of the caterpillar until they are ready to undergo metamorphosis. Then they eat their way out of the caterpillar (sorry for the graphic details!) and create their cocoons on the outside of the caterpillar. We decided to keep the hornworm for observation, hoping to see the wasps hatch! Unlucky Mrs. Roach woke up to a bug bucket full of wasps on Sunday morning, and found they were escaping into my house! After rushing them outside, I was able to take this video to show everyone the end result of our bug adventure!

Check out the video and some of the pictures I took of the hornworm, the empty cocoons, and the baby wasps!

Thanks for all of your bug show and tell's! They've been great!

Happy Birthday Lulu!

Happy Birthday Avery!

Our First Insect Week

We finished our first week of our insect unit and are loving it!

We learned that most insects have compound eyes, and were able to try on some compound eye glasses so we could see like a praying mantis! Now we understand why we look so scary to an insect...they see hundreds of us!

We were even more excited to find an actual praying mantis on the playground that day to study! Mrs. Roach's class is really buggin' out!

Curriculum Night

Curriculum Night was this past Thursday evening. If you missed it, don't worry!

Each parent received a year long curriculum map, which briefly detailed the broader topics we will be covering with your child this year. They also received a more detailed first quarter map that gives you a snapshot of what we are currently and will be discussing this first quarter.

Each of these maps will be going home in Manatee Folders tomorrow. Feel free to email me with any questions you have and I will be happy to clarify! Our hope is that these maps will help you feel more a part of what is going on in our classroom, and will help you help your first grader!

Welcome to Mrs. Roach's Room!

Our year is off to a great start! I have been enjoying getting to know all these smiling faces, and seeing their personalities emerge!

Make sure you check back often for pictures and updates about what's going on in our classroom!
